• Fouad al-Farhan, business man with family, discussed social issues and wrote about political prisoners of Saudi Arabia in his blog

• his blog is one of the most widely read in Saudi Arabia

• arrested since December 10th 2007 for „purposes of interrogation“ by the government

• before, he was asked to apologize for what he wrote

• first Saudi blogger to be detained by state security

+ At first, we wanted to know what's the situation in Saudi Arabia is like?

• monarchy

• rules from the Sharia (Islamic Law)

• The „Economist's Democracy Index“ describes the Saudi Government as the ninth most authoritarian regime in the world

• This is according to the „Press Freedom Rankings“: 82 points (comparison: North Korea - 97, Sweden - 11)

-> no constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech

-> The press, according to the government and the conservative religious establishment, is a tool to educate the masses, propagate government views and promote national unity

-> recently there have been marginal improvements for journalists, allowing freedom to report on social issues and discuss the government accountability

-> those efforts are relatively isolated

-> this may be the reason why the government could take an example of Mr. Farhan

+ Set in context to Mr. Farhan's blog:

-> underline of his blog: “freedom, dignity, justice, equality, public participation and the other lost Islamic values.”

-> Farhan was accusing the government „of detaining people under the guides of terrorism laws when they in fact have their own opinions“

-> We heard also about a list F. made, on which he mentioned among other people a prince and a religious leader mentioned, but for that we have no reliable source for this information

-> this must have appeared very offensive to the government, think of the „Press Freedom Ranking“ of Saudi Arabia!

-> Farhan himself wrote: „they think I’m running an online campaign promoting their issues“

+ main point: Has Mr. Farhan influence of the Saudi Arabian Population? Is his Blog subversiv?

• hard to say, we didn't find any big consequences like in the case of US Senator Trent Lott

• It says on the New York Times Website, his blog is one of the most widely read in Saudi Arabia, but we couldn't find out how many people he finally reached and what these people communicated to other people and so on

• on the other hand reached Mr. Farhan and his supporting friends the global attention all over the world

• You can recognize this in the CNN Reports the as well as in world press (NYT, german „Spiegel“, ...)

-> Mr. Farhan can be seen as a kind of martyrer

• at least the fact that Mr. Farhan is the first blogger under arrest in Saudia Arabia shows the governments fear of this hardly to control blogosphere
